  • 5 Reasons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is Ideal for Self-Defense

Screen Shot 2015-01-13 at 8.53.12 PM
Hello, from Dojo Diva (Kristen Lamb) at Gracie Barra Jujitsu Mansfield, the definitive Brazilian Jujitsu instruction in the Fort Worth/Arlington area. As a well-known author, part of my brand is martial arts. I’ve been in some form of martial arts since I was four. I studied Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Japanese Jujitsu, boxing and now Brazilian Jujitsu. So, whenever one of my fans is curious about martial arts, they come to me.

Which is the best form of martial arts for self-defense?

I know everyone has an opinion, but unless they answer Brazilian Jujitsu? They are wrong šŸ˜› .

    KIDDING!

    Okay, only partly.

After studying so many other forms of defense, why am I partial to BJJ? I will tell you.

    #1—Brazilian Jujitsu Gives Us Options

If someone tries to attack me and I have been trained in a striking sport or a combative, then I am trained to punch, kick, strike (obviously) or even go for eyes or throats. Not that this is bad, but it isn’t always necessary.

    It’s overkill.

In Brazilian Jujitsu I am taught all kinds of options that will stop the attack and the attacker without doing any physical harm.

If I am involved in a dispute and I break someone’s nose and arm, yes I’m “safe.” Then the cops are going to show and then???

    Er…

It’s gonna get sticky (aside from the blood). If I have to deal with police, which would I rather defend/explain?

That I pulled the attacker to the ground and wrapped him in a choke that harmlessly rendered him unconscious?

    OR…

Do I want to explain how I took out an attacker’s knees and he may never walk again?

And I know that if we are defending from a legitimate attack, we generally don’t have to fear criminal prosecution. We DO, however, need to expect the civil suit suing us for damages. It WILL happen. Then we are going to have to explain why crushing someone’s larynx was an appropriate use of force.

Now, with Jujitsu, if an attacker is SO overpowering that I need to use more force (I.e. dislocating a shoulder)? I can. I HAVE that option. BUT, I have A LOT MORE options that actually will do little more than hurt for a day or two.

#2—Brazilian Jujitsu is Ideal for a Small Person

FACT 1: Most people do NOT know how to fight.

FACT 2:They REALLY do not know how to fight on the ground.

FACT 3: Almost ALL fights go to the ground.

Even if the fight doesn’t go to the ground, BJJ trains us to TAKE it there because it is our DOMAIN. On the ground? Size matters far less.

As a 42 year old 5’3″ female? There is only so hard I can hit, kick or punch. If I am against a far larger opponent, one who might even be under the influence? It is going to be REALLY TOUGH for me to hit or kick in a way that will make an impression. But, the smaller you are? The better the throw. It is all physics and since my center of gravity is lower? I can devastate a larger attacker and gain the advantage in a fraction of a second.

Brazilian Jujitsu is a rapist’s worst nightmare. Most attackers’ go-to move is to drag a potential victim to the ground and then use body weight and strength to pin the person for the attack. If the “victim” knows BJJ? That attacker just sealed his fate. The ground is PRECISELY where we want to be.

#3—Brazilian Jujitsu is Known as The “Gentle Martial Art”

People practice BJJ into their 70s. Guess who’s one of the most targeted groups for violent crimes? Women and older people. Train in Jujitsu, and the attacker will quickly realize…this is going to be a VERY bad day.

Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 11.04.15 AM

#4—AGAIN, Brazilian Jujitsu is the GENTLE Martial Art

Remember, I am older. I had to give up the striking sports because they were simply too hard on my body. BJJ keeps me fit and limber and I don’t have to worry as much about shattering a hand by punching some blockhead.

But let’s go back to self-defense.

In case you don’t know? Punching and kicking can hurt MORE than just the attacker. We can be the one who ends up with broken bones and dislocations. I was in a fight years ago and by punching the person attacking me? I ended up with two cracked bones in my hand. Not saying BJJ is pain and injury-free, but fighting is not like Hollywood.

    Punching and kicking HURTS.

    A LOT.

    NOT FUN.
#5—Brazilian Jujitsu is Ideal for Children

    Bully THIS!
    Bully THIS!

Aside from being able to defend themselves from potential kidnapping or sexual assault, bullying is a problem as old as time. But, remember that litigious society we mentioned in the beginning? If your child has to defend him/herself from a larger attacker, what’s going to go over better with the school officials? Our kid bashing a kid’s face in, or an arm-lock to hold the bully in place (without injury) until a teacher can arrive on-scene?

I know we all have our favorites and I love the other sports too. But I will say that for those who practice a different discipline, I highly recommend adding BJJ to your toolbox. You stay safe and let the criminals be the ones in trouble…NOT YOU.

    Stay Frosty,

  • 10 Ways to Accelerate Your Jiu Jitsu Game

    Image via Gracie Magazine
    Image via Gracie Magazine

At Gracie Barra Mansfield, we bring you the best Jiu Jitsu training in the DFW area. But Gracie was not always a thing in these parts. I recall training in traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu back in the early 90s. No one had ever heard of Jiu Jitsu. Texas was firmly Tae Kwon Do country.

Then the Gracie family brought us into a new era for martial arts with the UFC.

Who were these little guys from Brazil who were just laying waste to competitors? Year after year, the Gracie family decimated the competition and it became clear fairly quickly that if a fighter did not cross-train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, that fighter didn’t stand much of a chance in the octagon. If the fight went to the ground—and against a Gracie it ALWAYS went to the ground—then it was GAME OVER.

Since the Gracies took the world by storm, Jiu Jitsu has become a far more common sport which we love to see because we believe in Jiu Jitsu for everyone. Jiu Jitsu studios abound. As we like to say in Texas, “You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting one.” I have no idea who came up with this saying or why anyone would want to swing a deceased feline…but Texans do all kinds of weird things.

    Case in point.

    Looks legit.
    Looks legit.

Suffice to say that while Jiu Jitsu studios might be common, I can tell you from experience that there is nothing quite like going to the source.

I began my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training at another dojo, but after training there a year, I felt I needed something more. When I took a trial class at Gracie Barra Mansfield? No comparison.

Now that I’ve been in Jiu Jitsu long enough I’ve found my goals have shifted from, “OH DEAR GOD JUST STAY ALIVE!” to thinking more strategically. For those who spend any amount of time in Jiu Jitsu, you will find that there will be periods of plateau, where you just don’t seem to be improving no matter what you do.

I used to think that was just being a white belt. But, now that I am a blue belt, there are days I feel I might actually know what I am doing and then…*screeching brakes*

Thing is, we are often our own worst enemies. Thus today, I’d like to share with you some tips from the masters over at Gracie Magazine to help you always be improving your Jiu Jitsu game.

    ***

You’ve been training for a while now and despite all your efforts, you don’t seem to be improving a lot on the mats.

So, we decided to compile 10 valuable pieces of advice to get you back on tracks and have your game improving by the day.

    1. Be Curious

Speak up when you have a doubt and you need your Professor or instructor to explain it. Many times, the devil is on the details and a quick explanation is all you need to have that technique clarified.

    2. Keep a Notebook

Write down what you learned every week and then revise. Find your weakness and the ways to overcome them. Don’t trust in your memory alone, specially if you are a beginner.

    3. Have a Game Plan

When you are a beginner and it’s time to spar, don’t just ad lib as you go. Have a plan and aim for your specific targets with specific techniques. Leave improvisations for further ahead in your learning process.

    4. Know Your Limits

Don’t mix toughness with stupidity. If you are injured, don’t make it worse by training before it’s healed. If you are caught, tap and live to train another day.

    See you on the mats!

  • Do You Want To Start Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? How To Get Started!

Do You Want To Start Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? How To Get Started!

When January 1st rolls around many potential students think about getting started training BJJ.

Here are 5 Tips for Getting Started in BJJ:

    1. You don’t need to ā€œget in shape before I startā€.

This is a common statement by people who are apprehensive about getting started in bjj.Ā Part of it likely originates in the (understandable) wish to avoid ā€œpaying your duesā€ and getting tapped a lot at first.
Truth is the Gracie Barra warm up and drills will build the type of fitness that bjj requires without being overly exhausting.Ā When you focus on the techniques you are being taught and attend class 2-4 times per week your body will adapt to the new demands.

    The famous GB warm up

    GB warm up

    2. Expect to be the ā€œnailā€ early on.

Jiu-jitsu legend Renzo Gracie famously said ā€œSometimes you are the hammer and sometimes you are the nail!ā€Ā When you start any new skill, there is that initial step learning curve.

You are not alone in feeling like the proverbial ā€œnailā€. I have witnessed well conditioned competitive fighters from other martial arts flounder when they first started.Ā It isn’t only you!

    3. You don’t need to buy every piece of training gear in the pro shop to start

Some students of bjj are ā€œgear headsā€ and have every piece of training aid and fashionable rash guard and spats, limited edition kimono… Ā theĀ truth is you need to spend hundreds of dollars to get going.Ā read also:Ā 7 Things To Keep In Your BJJ Gear Bag

A kimono and rash guard are really all you need to get started. Usually your gb schoolĀ has kimonos in stock in the pro shop and can fit you properly.

    4. Being fit to start helps, but your body will have to adjust to the sports specific requirements of ground grappling.

    This is related to #1
You might have a six-pack and have great ā€œgunsā€ from all of those concentration curls at the gym, but you will find out quickly that the conditioning required for grappling is different!Ā Forget the beach muscles and think more about core strength, abdominal’s and muscular endurance.

There is a principle of sports science known as ā€œspecificity of trainingā€ which means the closer the exercise is to the specific demands of the sport, the greater the carry over benefit.

    bj_global

    5. Go watch a class before signing up

Gracie Barra recommends that you seek a legitimate gb schoolĀ with classes run by a black belt instructor.Ā It isn’t always possible to find a black belt where you live but it should be your first choice.Ā Remember, any martial arts school can put ā€œbrazilian jiu-jitsuā€ on their sign, but it is no guarantee that the instructor is qualified to teach beginners!

If there are numerous bjj schools in your area drop by and ask to observe a class. You will get a feeling as to the culture and vibe of the school.

The Gracie Barra mission is striving to put a qualified instructor and schoolĀ in your city. Look for a Gracie Barra bjjĀ schoolĀ near you here!

  • Introducing Holiday Combatives Training—Yule-Jitsu

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.18.22 PM
Gracie-Barra Mansfield, Texas is all about serving the greater community and we believe Jiu Jitsu is for everyone. But, we also believe in innovation, which is why we are the ONLY dojo in the WORLD to offer martial arts to keep you safe specifically during the holiday season with—Yule-Jitsu.

Yes, you read correctly. Yule-Jitsu. Because let’s face it…the holidays are trying to kill you so why not CHOKE THEM OUT?

Maybe you think I am nuts. You’d be correct. Maybe you think I simply want attention and blog content. Also correct. But here’s the thing.

Millions of people are killed by their own Christmas decorations EVERY DAY, but more so during Christmas. In fact, holiday decorations are the LEADING cause of death among all people of all ages in EVERY country according to an article I just published on Wikipedia.

But how much of this tragedy could be prevented with just a little bit of preparation? How many other forms of martial arts have been blind to this vacuum in combatives training?

    NO MORE.

We at Gracie Mansfield could not allow this kind of reckless irresponsibility to continue, so today I bring you the foundational moves of YULE-Jitsu.

    The Fir Mount Escape

The unthinkable happens and you are attacked by your own TREE. This escape is named The Fir Mount escape namely because I really dig clever word play. This escape will work on more than just fir trees and is effective on any evergreen real or artificial.

Maybe you are hauling in that “natural tree” and trip over the cat. Maybe you have too much egg nog and lose your footing. Maybe your home is invaded by a burglar with a record and since he is on parole? He cannot have a GUN and so he uses a TREE.

    You are trapped. WHAT…DO…YOU…DO?

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 12.47.29 PM

    Remain calm.

The key is not to panic. If you feel wetness, it is probably not blood. If it’s a natural tree, likely you just spilled water down your leg…or you’ve wet your own pants. But the thing is? Stay calm.

The force of being crushed by your own tree probably will not kill you, but it will give you really awkward carpet burn that could lead to serious marriage counseling.

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 12.46.07 PM

Breathe. Create distance. Work your hands between you and the offending spruce to get the weight off your chest.

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 12.56.32 PM

    Shrimp out.
Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 12.58.49 PM

You should now be free from your tree and can now change pants.

    Holiday Light Choke Escape

Holiday lights. We love them. Strands of lighted beauty? Or ELECTRIFIED AESTHETICALLY PLEASING DEATH ROPES? All perspective. Again, DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE YOUR ENEMY. That is a foundational teaching of Yule-Jitsu.

Some see eight tiny reindeer. In Yule-Jitsu you learn to see the STAMPEDING HERD OF INFLATED NYLON ‘MADE IN CHINA’ DEATH.

To demonstrate this escape, I’ve had my two assistants help me with an active attack scenario.

Let’s say you are forced to decorate a tree with young people. A teen who is supposed to be helping but is listening to music videos on YouTube. His little sister is enamored with decorations and thus not paying attention.

Meaning when trouble comes sniffing you better be a BEAR WOLF OF YULE-JITSU…because you are on your own.

In a vain attempt to keep the lights from twisting into one giant mangle only good for throwing in the trash, you get the bright idea to “loop” the Electrified Aesthetically Pleasing Death Rope (E.A.P.D.R.) around your neck. Then something goes horribly wrong…

Trouble. First, assess if there really IS trouble. Can you simply slip free of the E.A.P.D.R.?

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.06.12 PM

    DEFINITELY trouble. Again, remain calm.

Before creating Yule-Jitsu my first instinct was to simply gnaw through the E.A.P.D.R. Let’s just say that is a really bad plan. Using a knife? Equally bad plan. Throw water on it to lubricate and wriggle free?

No, though I thought that would work too.

WHICH IS WHY WE NEED YULE-JITSU…

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.08.24 PM

Create space between your throat and the E.A.P.D.R.

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.11.17 PM

    Work free from the choke.

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.14.01 PM

E.A.P.D.R.s are a genuine threat. No one is required to register them, get a permit for them and I am proof any idiot can be in possession of these so please. Practice your Yule-Jitsu.

Moving on to the final move in Yule-Jitsu. This move is helpful throughout the year but VERY useful during this time of year.

    The Dreaded Holiday Salesclerk

The Hair Iron Throw (or H.I.T.)

Ladies, you know what it’s like. You are shopping for gifts and if your hair is curly, some salesperson at a kiosk with a flatiron is after you. If your hair is straight? The assault will come in the form of a curling tool.

Some fools see a mall? I see a poor tactical position with no cover. YULE-JITSU TRAINING.

Though this move was developed to take out an enemy with a mad hot hair tool, it is also effective against clerks wielding perfume, cheaper cell phone plans, artificial hair pieces and wrinkle creams.

Again, my assistant is helping me demonstrate the Hair Iron Throw (H.I.T.).

Notice my assistant sees the coming threat and is immediately in her ready stance.

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.00.25 PM

Trap the attacker’s hand. This keeps your hair straight (or curly) and also keeps the hot iron contained so you don’t get burned as you further execute the H.I.T.

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.02.21 PM

Rotate the arm. Again, this creates more space to keep your hair the freaking way you STYLED IT WHEN YOU LEFT.

Also it will throw the attacker off balance and this permits a much smaller person to take out a far larger aggressor. Children who study Yule-Jitsu can also help maintain a parent or guardian’s current hair style and keep any adult from purchasing some overpriced “Ionic Tool” and why do we need IONS in our hair anyway?

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.04.00 PM

Follow through. Notice as she rotates, I go over. Maintain control and finish. Keep control of the hair tool during the H.I.T. Finish the move as needed.
Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.35.48 PM

Practice your Yule-Jitsu and you can LIVE to see Valentines. If not? According to my imaginary stats you will be dead by the end of this post anyway.

Screen Shot 2015-12-14 at 1.17.04 PM

Stay safe! Know your Yule-Jitsu. Merry Christma-Hana-Kwanza-kah from Gracie Barra Mansfield!

What are your thoughts about Yule-Jitsu? Are you shocked there has been such a glaring hole in self-defense? Are you even MORE SHOCKED that people like me are allowed access to computers? Do we need other forms of holiday inspired martial arts?

We love hearing from you! Come join us for a free month of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and we will throw in some Yule-Jitsu for FREE!

  • Add a Little Aqua—The Perfect Compliment to Jiu Jitsu Training

Screen Shot 2015-08-27 at 11.25.28 AM

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a fantastic workout. We at Gracie Barra Mansfield work hard to make sure of that. Yet, like all workouts, soreness and fatigue happen and old injuries can flare up. Instead of taking off completely, we can cross train in the water to help ease pain, soreness, inflammation and stiffness. Also, the best way to FIX a problem is to prevent it in the first place. By using some simple aquatic exercises, we can strengthen those areas most vulnerable to injury.

Water is an ideal environment for cross-training and rehabilitation. Since we are effectively weightless while in water, our joints can get a break because there is zero impact. Also, water is three times more resistant than air, so we get much more workout than we might realize.

As a writer, I have chronic issues with tendonitis. I also have problems with my back, neck and shoulder (courtesy of years of travel lugging around loads of luggage), which is why I add a regular dose of swimming and aquatic exercises to my routine. When I am diligent about complimenting my Jiu Jitsu training with aquatics, I feel better, sleep better and PERFORM better.

It’s hard to do well on the mat when our body is stiff, and our joints are sore.

Since I am smart enough to look to the experts, I’d like to recommend this article. Gracie Magazine offers 7 pool exercises exercises for rehabilitation and injury prevention. . .

“The specific training of a fighter is already stressful enough and water training can complement and develop various physical qualities. In the water, you may use devices that can increase the intensity of the exercises through resistance, what works better because there are no impacts on the joints. It’s important to understand that exhausting workout routines and competition training can often overwhelm your body and change an outcome. This water training method was developed by Prof. Alvaro Romano who has for many years since the 1980s started to train athletes from various sports….”

Renzo Gracie, one of the most successful and respected black belts famously said ā€œSometimes you are the hammer, and sometimes you are the nail!ā€

No where is that more true than when you are first starting out in bjj. Everyone has more experience than you and when you begin live rolling, the match is happening so fast and usually with the new person on the bottom.

read also:Ā 3 Pieces of Advice for White Belts

This is where the new student is feeling like the proverbial nail.Ā Without the technical experience and more accurately – the correct understanding of strategy, the new whitebelt is prone to making some tactical errors in trying to ā€œsurviveā€ the roll and avoid being submitted.

Here are the 6 worst white belt errors:

    1) Mistake: Give the back to escape mount / bottom

The rear mount is the most dominant position in bjj and the rear naked choke is the most successful submission in the UFC.Ā Giving your back is a HUGE No No!
All of your weapons are turned away from your opponent and all of his weapons are turned towards you! It can be very difficult to escape once your opponent has secured rear mount with hooks.Ā Correct: Bridge escape or elbow to knee escape.

    2) Mistake: Trying to submit within the opponents closed guard

When any attempts to pass your opponent guard are stopped, it becomes tempting to try to cross choke or otherwise choke the opponent from inside their closed guard.Ā This gives your straight arms to the guard player and more often than not results in tapping to straight arm lock from the bottom.
If you are the guard player, this is exactly what you want your opponent to do!
Correct: Instead of trying to submit, look to pass your opponent before any submission attempts

    3) Mistake: Straight arming / pushing to escape mount

When mounted by your opponent it is instinctive to push them off (bench press!) to get the weight off of you.Ā However, you are literally giving them the straight arm bar by extending your arms. Merry Xmas, here is your present!
Secondly, it requires a lot of muscle power to push someone’s bodyweight off of you and you quickly get fatigued.
Correct: Correct defensive posture and framing with arms; bridge escape or elbow to knee escape

    4) Mistake: Trying to collar choke from the bottom of mount

This happens typically after the beginning student has seen a ā€œHelio Gracieā€ cross collar choke from the guard.Ā Not correctly understanding the position difference between mount and guard, they try to cross choke and mounted opponent.Ā Ironically, this attack results in them getting arm locked!
Correct: Understand that you attack from guard or mount: NOT inside the guard or from bottom of mount

    5) Mistake: Grabbing fingers to avoid choke
It might be understandable that when you feel your opponent snaking his arm around your neck for a choke, to grab whatever you can to prevent being choked.Ā But grabbing the fingers and twisting is against bjj rules (small joint manipulation) and is very likely to cause a sprained or even broken finger.
A painfully broken digit could cause you to miss work and not able to make your living. To someone like a dentist, this injury would be disastrous!
Correct: The correct defence is to grab the hand or control the sleeve of the attacker

    6) Mistake: Not tapping when caught in submission

Part of this is that the beginner student doesn’t understand the limitations of their own body. How far can a shoulder be twisted in kimura before something has to give?
Secondly, many students measure their progress by whether they tap or not in a 5 minute roll. They will resist too long after being caught in a submission.Ā The unfortunate result is usually a sprained / twisted shoulder or popped elbow and a painful lesson.
Correct: Tap early and often. It is better to tap and then live to roll another day!Ā

  • Summer Travel Tips for a SAFE and SANE Vacation

We are heading into Fourth of July Weekend! *happy dance* We at Gracie Barra Mansfield, Texas want you to have a safe and relaxing summer and we hope it is memorable for the right reasons. I’ve been blessed to do a LOT of traveling for fun and for work. Some trips were fantastic and others? Very close to being an episode of “Locked Up Abroad.”

    I could tell some stories!

Not only am I going to give you just some general tips to make traveling easier, but then we will talk about ways to be SAFE.

    Some General “Make-Life-Easier” Tips

Arrive 90 Minutes Early for Your Flight (TWO THREE HOURS for ANYTHING International)

Yes, I used to be one of those people running practically onto the tarmac yelling, “Don’t shut the door!” Those days are OVER. The airports now have a labyrinth of security we have to maneuver and on top of that the airlines have fewer planes in the air, which means almost all flights are overbooked and if we miss our flight?

Expect to get routed through Katmandu to get there (and that is if they can even GET you a connection). Missing a flight is a NIGHTMARE, so get there EARLY.

You need that extra time. Summertime is heavy for travel because not only do we have all those business people who already fly year-round, we also get the influx of those going on vacation. So, this means there are a lot of people.

Because this is the time of year that people who are not seasoned travelers fly, it slows things down. These are the people who have lived in a cave and don’t know that they need to pack all toiletries in ONE QUART-SIZED BAG. They also never heard of the shoe-bomber and probably wore something super-complicated with LACES…and buckles.

This means we have to give plenty of buffer for getting through security. Better to have and not need than to need and not have.

You might not get stuck behind the large family who all wants to bring a Big Gulp on board and not take off their shoes, but?

You might. Just plan for it.

    Carry-On is Our FRIEND

When I fly domestically I NEVER check luggage, EVER. It is too easy for it to get lost, especially if there is a connection involved. But, if you DO need more stuff than what can fit in a carry-on, that’s fine but pack a change of clothes, medications and toiletries (ESSENTIALS) in the carry-on. This way, if your luggage takes a separate vacation, you are okay until the airport wrangles it back to you.

You DO NOT want to be in a resort location and have to buy essentials. It might require a small business loan. And don’t you want to spend your money on something FUN like a monkey made of coconuts instead of shaving cream?

Our Backup Plan Needs a Backup Plan

Photocopy all IDs, car rental agreements and credit cards and then keep them in the safe at your hotel. I was once in LA and lost my wallet with all my ID and my credit cards, but because I had photocopies, it was easier to get the cards frozen and I could make my case to the TSA WHY I didn’t have my driver’s license. Yes, I had to go through a ton of additional security layers to prove I was ME, but having a photocopy of my license minimized the drama.

Now the SAFETY Part. Safety is what what we at Gracie Barra Mansfield DO.

There are the obvious things we can do to stay safe. When traveling in a crowded location, wear something BRIGHT to make it easier to keep up with one another. Have a rally point established in case the group gets separated. Don’t flash around a bunch of cash and carry valuables in a travel wallet that is close to your person.

Some of the less obvious tips.

    ONLY Use Resort-Approved Transportation

This is advice that really applies to traveling abroad. Once we leave the US, we are NOT in the US anymore. And while that sounds laughable, the news is always full of stories of naive tourists who became victims. Places like Jamaica and Mexico are beautiful destinations, but they also have a very dark underworld and Americans are prime prey for extortion and abductions so it is our job to not be a target.

Resorts WANT to maintain a sound reputation. It is how they MAKE MONEY. I know it might cost more to use an approved taxi, but it is way cheaper than being ransomed out of Central America.

When I was in Jamaica, taxi drivers running cheap island tours would take unwitting tourists all the way to the other side of the island and then demand thousands of dollars to take them BACK to the ship. They ran these types of scams constantly and continued to MAKE MONEY DOING THIS because tourists would try to save some cash and ignore this advice.

    BE CAREFUL OF PHOTO-OPS

There are some destinations where one might see people dressed in character wandering around to make for memorable photos. If you happen to be in Boston, Massachusetts I am not really worried about getting a picture with “Ben Franklin” just pay attention to your valuables.

But there are destinations like the Coliseum in Rome, Italy where you will encounter Roman Centurions roaming around for a photo op. What many tourists don’t realize (until it is too late) is that many of these folks are pickpockets or scam artists. So enjoy, but be careful. Whenever we let strangers in our personal space, we should be extra vigilant.

    Situational Awareness

One of the reasons tourists make for excellent targets is they get so caught up in taking selfies and pictures and gaping at the sights that they aren’t being aware of their surroundings. Pay attention.

Stay in the Popular Tourist Areas and Stick to the TOUR

We all want to venture off the beaten path, but this can be very dangerous. In some places, we just don’t want to wander into that back alley where we are a good target to be robbed or abducted. Remember, we are not locals so we don’t know when we are meandering into a bad part of town.

Additionally, there is a reason that wildlife tours stick to a certain path and there is a REASON they have trained guides. We underestimate nature at our own peril.

There was a story of a couple from Dallas who took a tram ride up to the top of the San Jacinto Mountain and then decided to take a stroll away from the well-traveled area with a gift shop. Even though they saw hikers and climbers in full gear, they believed they could go hiking around “for fun.” What began as a quick jaunt off the path turned into being stranded alone in the desert with no food or water or wilderness training. And they nearly DIED.

Do NOT Volunteer That You Are An American

Whether we like it or not, this is a scary world in some scary times. Americans are premium targets. Most of the time, it is pretty clear we are an American, but we should try to keep things low-key. As a novelist, my books involve Mexican and South American drug cartels and that is some SCARY stuff. Cartels are known for preying on tourists and they have a special taste for “Americans”, so just be aware…and tell them you’re Canadian šŸ˜‰ .

Seriously. Strangers don’t need to know THAT much about us.

I’d say I am sorry if any of this frightens you, but I’m not sorry. The world is fabulous and beautiful, but we need to respect it is also dangerous. Whenever we vacation we are in an unknown and we are vulnerable. Our job is to stay frosty and limit the opportunities for the bad guys to do us harm.

Enjoy your vacation. Get some R&R and then join us here at Gracie Barra to work off those frozen beverages from that all-inclusive resort šŸ˜€ .

    Stay smart and stay safe!
